Description

Small displacement in-line four cylinder engine BMW M40 appeared in 1988 and was developed on the basis of M40B18. The new crankshaft with a smaller swing (was 81 mm) and other pistons was installed in motor. Connecting rods have remained unchanged. M40 1.6 differ from 1.8 by intake manifold, throttle valve, sparkplugs and ECU. The cylinder head has not changed – there is the same 8-valve single camshaft (SOHC) with hydraulic valve lifters. The diameter of the intake valves is 42 mm, 36 mm - exhaust. Features of M40 camshaft: phase - 244/244; rise - 10.6 / 10.6 mm.

Cam drives by timing belt. The belt itself is not too reliable and does not have the proper width, resulting in a short life. On average, the timing belt and the roller replacing on M40 engine is required every 20,000 miles.

This engine was used on BMW cars with the index 16i. Replacement for engine appeared in 1993, it was the new M43B16.
