This engine is the junior version of the inline fours family M111 (it included the M111 E20, M111 E22 and M111 E23). Motor appeared in 1993 and replaced the M102 E18. Unlike its outdated predecessor, in new engine based on cylinder block E20 of M111, but with smaller cylinders and smaller diameter pistons - 85.3 mm ( E20 has 89.9 mm). In general, it is similar to the two-liter engine. The cylinder head is 16-valve with two camshafts (DOHC). There are hydraulic lifters and electronic fuel injection. The diameters of the intake valves, relatively M111 E20, reduced to 33 mm (were 35 mm), exhaust - to 29 mm (were 31 mm). The timing drives by chain with a resource about 150000 miles. This engine came in two versions: M111.920 and M111.921. The control system for injection and ignition on M111.920 is Bosch PMS, on M111.920 version - Bosch HFM.

Motor was producing until 2000, when it was removed from production. Two years later the new engine M271 E18 ML was presented. All faults and defects of the engine M111.920 / M111.921 completely the same as those present on older engines M111 E20.
